When Should I See A Pelvic Health Specialist During Pregnancy?

Navigating pregnancy comes with its own set of challenges, and knowing when to seek the expertise of a pelvic health specialist can make a world of difference. Let’s explore the timeline for scheduling your visit and the signs that indicate it’s time to seek professional guidance.

When Should I See a Pelvic Health Specialist During Pregnancy?

I’ll admit, I’m a bit biased, but I love getting the chance to see people even before they conceive. It allows us to establish a baseline and anticipate any changes that may occur throughout pregnancy. However, if you’re already pregnant and experiencing no symptoms, I typically recommend scheduling your first visit toward the end of the first trimester or early in the second trimester.

From there, we’ll devise a plan tailored to your needs. If you’re feeling strong, coordinated, and have all the essentials covered, you may only need to see me a handful of times. But if issues crop up—or if you’re planning on activities like Olympic lifting or double unders during pregnancy—we may need to schedule more frequent sessions.

What Are Signs and Symptoms That You Should Schedule an Appointment to See a Specialist When Pregnant?

Knowing when to schedule that appointment isn’t always straightforward. Here are some signs and symptoms that warrant a visit to a pelvic health specialist during pregnancy:

  • Pelvic Pain: This includes pubic bone pain, tailbone pain, pelvic girdle pain, and round ligament pain. Don’t brush off discomfort as just “round ligament pain”—there may be more going on, and there are ways to address it.
  • Bladder or Bowel Issues: Any urinary or bladder-related symptoms, bowel issues, or changes in bowel habits should prompt a visit.
  • Sexual Discomfort: If you’re experiencing pain or discomfort during sexual activity, it’s worth addressing with a specialist.
  • Activity Limitations: If you’re finding it challenging to engage in your usual exercise routine or daily activities due to pain, restricted range of motion, or other reasons, seek professional guidance.

Remember, pregnancy isn’t a one-size-fits-all experience. By tuning into your body and seeking the appropriate support when needed, you can navigate this journey with confidence and comfort. If any of these signs resonate with you, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment. Your comfort and well-being during pregnancy are paramount.
